People’s SAARC Regional Convergence, a South Asian mega event of civil society will be held in Kathmandu ahead of the 18th SAARC summit. The three-day event that bears the slogan of ‘People’s movement uniting South Asia for deepening democracy, social justice and peace’, will start on 22 November and last on 24 November endorsing a declaration as South Asian civil society’s common voice.
Organizing a press conference in Kathmandu on Monday, the People’s SAARC secretariat informed that the People’s Convergence will bring together prominent civil society leaders, representatives of civil society, and various organizations from SAARC nations who will conduct discussions and brainstorm on South Asian people’s common issues on several themes.
People’s SAARC coordinator Ms. Sharmila Karki, who is also the president of NGO Federation of Nepal, a focal organization of People’s SAARC in Nepal said that during the convergence, around 70 thematic programs on different regional issues will be organized. According to her, the gathering will endorse a declaration as a common regional document on behalf of an entire civil society of South Asia, which will be handed over to the SAARC secretariat.
